Our Team

Director of the Institute

is appointed and removed by the Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR). He sets the Institute’s strategy and goals and is accountable for his work to the Council.

Since 1. 5. 2014 the director of ÚSTR has been: Mgr. Zdeněk Hazdra, Ph. D.

Deputy Director of the Institute

is appointed and removed by the Institute director. He represents the director fully in accordance with his rights and duties as a statutory representative. He has direct control over the director of the Department of Research and Education and the director of the Production Department.

Research Section 1938–1945

Primarily carries out research into the period of Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, beginning with restrictions on freedom in 1938 and ending with the consequences of the occupation and WWII. Focuses on the security services on our territory in that period and their impact on society.

Stanislava Vodičková, DiS. – head of section

Research Section 1945–1989 I

Primarily carries out research into the dictatorship of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and all linked events and examines the anti-democratic and repressive actions of state agencies, particularly in the period from February 1948 to November 1989. It investigates the activities of the security services and organisations based on the communist ideology as well as the impact of the socialist dictatorship and its security apparatus on society, including methods used to legitimise the dictatorship of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in society.

PhDr. Ondřej Vojtěchovský, Ph.D. – head of section

Education Section

Focuses on special education for teachers in the field of contemporary history, produces aids to teaching modern history for schools, monitors teaching standards in this area and is involved in civic education.

Vojtěch Ripka, Ph.D. – head of section

Third Resistance Law Agenda Section

Produces statements for administrative proceedings under law no. 262/2011 Coll. on participation in the resistance and opposition to communism.

ÚSTR Council

is the supreme body of ÚSTR.  It comprises seven members elected and removed by the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic.

ÚSTR Academic Council

is the ÚSTR director’s advisory body.
