An analysis of the discussion about history in dissent

Implementation: 2017–2018

Head of project: Petr Placák

Description of project: The attempt at a single interpretation of history is one of the basic features of totalitarian, authoritative and various nationalist regimes, including also the period of normalization. The project outlines how the independent intellectual environment surrounding Charter 77 dealt with the Communist regime’s monopoly claim to history. It will also discuss the regime’s attempt to intervene in this “independent” discussion and influence it in various ways to steer it in direction of the aforementioned single interpretation of history.
