A final farewell to Ctirad Mašín

On 24 August 2011 in Cleveland (Ohio, USA), last respects were paid to Ctirad Mašín, an active participant in the anti-Nazi and anti-communist resistance. In view of his having served in the U.S. Army, the service was conducted with military honours. A number of mourners convened for the ceremony and listened to speeches celebrating the life of the deceased. On this occasion, the minister of defence of the Czech Republic Alexander Vondra awarded Ctirad Mašín (in memoriam) and Josef Mašín the highest honour his ministry can bestow – the “Golden Linden.” The historian Petr Blažek attended as a representative of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes. Ctirad Mašín’s last resting place will be the Riverside Cemetery for the interment of military personnel (California, USA).

Visit of Iraqi minister to the Institute and the Archive (Prague, 7/19/2011)

Prague, 19 July 2011 – The Institute for the study of the totalitarian regimes and the Security Services Archive were visited by a delegation led by Minister for Human Rights, His Excellency Mohammed S. Al-Sudaney. Among the members of the delegation were also Mr. Adel Khudhair Abbas, Director General of the International Relations of the Ministry, Mr. Haidar Hussein Al-Ugaili, Director General of the Legal Affairs of the Ministry and Mr. Saad Gatu’Dakhel, Head of the Centre of Documentation of the Former Regime Crimes and Mr. Khalid AlKhero, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of Republic of Iraq in Prague. The delegation visited the Czech Republic in order to observe the methods and practices of investigating and dealing with crimes of communism and activities of ISTR, SSA and other archive and remembrance organisations in the Czech Republic.

The exhibition "Voices of Freedom - Radio Free Europe in the Cold War Era" partly organised by the Institute for the Study of the Totalitarian regimes was opened in Bavarian State Assembly in Munich on 29 June 2011. The Czech Centre in Munich, Military history institute and Ludwg-Maxmilians Universität in Munich also collaborated on the project.

Ljubljana, 3 June 2011 – The delegation led by Directors of the Institute for the study of the totalitarian regimes (ISTR) and of the Security Services Archive (SSA) Mgr. Daniel Herman and Mgr. Jana Poddaná Ph.D. has concluded an Agreement on cooperation in fields of research and educational and remembrance projects with the Slovenian Study Centre for National Reconciliation (Centre) during their visit in Slovenia on 2-3 June 2011.

Prague, 14 April 2011 – During this visit, which took place at the request of the Kuwaitis, His Excellency was particularly interested in the focus, activity and operations of the Institute and the Archive. The director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes Daniel Herman and the director of the Security Services Archive Jana Poddaná informed our Kuwaiti guest of the history and the main priorities of the activity of both institutions.
