Utilisation of the case of the Rosenberg spouses: interpretation by the East and the West

October 25, 2011 - Ronald Radosh, professor emeritus at the City University of New York and collaborator at the Hudson Institute in Washington, DC., USA gave a lecture at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes under the title „Utilisation of the case of the Rosenberg spouses: interpretation by the East and the West“. The talk focused on the relationship between the case of the Rosenberg spouses and the Rudolf Slánský trial in Czechoslovakia.

Crimes of the Communist Regimes - an assessment by historians and legal experts

English version of the collection contains more than 40 papers from participants at the international conference (Prague, 24 - 26 February 2010). The conference was made possible through cooperation with our partner institutions and organisations in the working group on the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. Its aim was to try and create an overview of the crimes committed by the communist regimes behind the Iron Curtain, to assess them from a legal point of view and to search for possible suggestions on how to deal with these crimes today.

Platform of European Memory and Conscience to be established in Prague during the summit of the Prime ministers of the Visegrad group

Prague, September 29, 2011 - Heads of 19 partner institutions and organisations specialised in the subject of totalitarian history from 13 EU member states will sign the founding document of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience in Prague on 14 October, 2011. Madeleine Albright visits the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright visited the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes on October 3, 2011.
As with her previous visit to the Institute in the spring of this year, the main objective of her visit was the search for documents relating to her father Josef Korbel. Madeleine Albright visited several departments of the Institute and learned more about their functions. As the chairperson of the National Democratic Institute, Ms Albright intends to intensify the cooperation with the Institute for the study of Totalitarian Regimes.

International symposium „Domestic and Foreign Czechoslovak Resistance in the Wartime Year of 1941“

The Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes would like to cordially invite you to an international symposium entitled Domestic and Foreign Czechoslovak Resistance in the Wartime Year of 1941. This event will take place on 6 October at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes.

The thematic areas of the symposium will comprise the Czechoslovak resistance abroad, the use of forced labour, repression by the occupation authorities, and the local resistance.

A final farewell to Ctirad Mašín

On 24 August 2011 in Cleveland (Ohio, USA), last respects were paid to Ctirad Mašín, an active participant in the anti-Nazi and anti-communist resistance. In view of his having served in the U.S. Army, the service was conducted with military honours. A number of mourners convened for the ceremony and listened to speeches celebrating the life of the deceased. On this occasion, the minister of defence of the Czech Republic Alexander Vondra awarded Ctirad Mašín (in memoriam) and Josef Mašín the highest honour his ministry can bestow – the “Golden Linden.” The historian Petr Blažek attended as a representative of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes. Ctirad Mašín’s last resting place will be the Riverside Cemetery for the interment of military personnel (California, USA).
