The Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes appointed a new director

Prague, 12 August 2010, Decision laid down by the Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes on its 38th meeting

  1. Institute Council has closed the selection procedure regarding the Institute directorship. Mgr. Daniel Herman has won the selection procedure. He obtained five from seven votes of Institutes Council members.
  2. Mgr. Daniel Herman was appointed as a director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes on Institutes Council meeting with the effect from 16th August 2010. The period of directorship is set down for five years. Candidate obtained in the Institute Council voting five from seven votes.

Swedish MP and embassy representative pay a visit to the Institute and the Archive

Prague, 7 June 2010 — On Monday, 7 June, the Swedish MP Hans Wallmark paid a visit to the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Security Services Archive in the company of the Counsellor of the Swedish Embassy in Prague Rolf Ericsson.

The Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes relieves Jiří Pernes of the post of director and appoints Zdeněk Hazdra

Prague, 12 May 2010 – At its 33rd session on 12 May 2010, the Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes removed the associate professor Jiří Pernes from the post of director of the institute. Until the results of a new selection procedure are announced, Mgr. Zdeněk Hazdra has been appointed as acting director with effect from 13 May 2010.

After the communist putsch in February 1948, Czech society had to endure a very difficult period. One important aspect of life in the country at that time consisted of resistance to the communist authorities who established a harsh totalitarian regime with the Constitution of 9 May 1948 followed by a raft of laws. Anti-communist resistance took a number of forms, which have not yet been sufficiently researched, not even 20 years after the fall of communism.

Ntsiki Sandi visits the Institute and Archive

Prague, March 1, 2010 – Ntsiki Sandi, South African advocate and former member of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, made a day-long visit to the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and Security Services Archive on Monday, March 1.

Discussion with Advocate Ntsiki Sandi, member of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission

On 1 March 2010, Advocate Ntsiki Sandi, former member of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be visiting the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and the Security Services Archive. At the occasion of this rare visit, the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes cordially invites to a discussion with Advocate Sandi on the topic “Truth and Reconciliation Commission”, to be held on Monday, 1 March 2010 at 3 – 4.30 pm in the 1st floor lecture hall of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, Siwiecova 2, Prague 3.

Statement by participants of the international conference “Crimes of the Communist Regimes”

On 26 February 2010, the last day of the Conference “Crimes of the Communist Regimes”, a statement was presented in which the participants respond to the situation of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes in connection with the election of a new Director, Jiří Pernes, on 17 February and the termination of the mandate of Director Pavel Žáček on 31 March 2010. The participants further react to the revocation of Dr. Marius Oprea, President, and the withdrawal of investigative powers from the Romanian Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes, which was announced while Mr Oprea was participating in the Conference and opening an exhibition of his Institute in Prague as a part of the antitotalitarian festival MENE TEKEL.

International conference “Crimes of the Communist Regimes”

Prague, February 24, 2010 - Vice-President of the Senate, Parliament of the Czech Republic Jiří Liška, Director of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes Pavel Žáček, Chairman of the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) Mirek Topolánek and Chinese dissident Harry Wu, who spent 19 years in forced labor camps in China, inaugurated the three-day international conference “Crimes of the Communist Regimes” on the Senate premises this morning.
